Howard And Beazley Pay Tribute To Packer

Kerry Packer was a “great Australian”, the Prime Minister, John Howard, said today.

PackerHoward wasted no time in holding a media conference at Kirribilli House, Sydney, this morning, just hours after Channel 9 broke the news that the station’s owner, Kerry Francis Bullmore Packer, had died, aged 68.

Packer was a loyal friend, the Prime Minister said.

Howard said the cliches “great Australian” and “larger than life character” were appropriate descriptions of Packer. He paid tribute to the media proprietor’s business acumen, citing Packer’s sale of the Nine network to Alan Bond in the 1980s. Packer subsequently bought Nine back at a fraction of the price. Bush Claims Success In Iraq, Urges Resolve

President George W. Bush has claimed success in Iraq, linking the war there with the September 11 attacks on the United States, and urged resolve.

President BushIn a televised address to the nation, Bush said: “Not only can we win the war in Iraq – we are winning the war in Iraq.”

In the latest of a series of speeches and interviews on his Iraq policy, Bush said the Iraq coalition “will remain on the offense”. He claimed success in establishing “the institutions of a unified and lasting democracy” and said the coalition “is moving forward with a reconstruction plan to revive Iraq’s economy and infrastructure”. Iemma Announces Police Strike Force To Combat Race Violence

The NSW Premier, Morris Iemma, has announced the formation of a police strike force to combat the violence that erupted around Sydney’s southern beaches yesterday.

Speaking at a press conference with the Police Minister, Carl Scully, and the Commissioner of Police, Ken Moroney, Iemma condemned the violence at Cronulla yesterday afternoon and at Maroubra last night.

Labor’s Twelve Days Of Christmas

Labor MPs sang an alternative version of The Twelve Days of Christmas outside Parliament House this morning.

Peter Garrett, Alan Griffin, Catherine King, Julie Owens and Anna Burke secured a spot on tonight’s television with their new lyrics attacking the Howard government’s industrial relations policy.

Costello Says He Won’t Challenge Howard

The Treasurer and Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party, Peter Costello, has today ruled out a leadership challenge to the Prime Minister, John Howard.

Costello’s comments come after a week of intense political pressure over the appointment of Robert Gerard to the Reserve Bank board. Speaking at a press conference called to announce the latest economic growth rate figures, Costello indicated that he was working on delivering next year’s May budget.
