This table shows the date of every Federal, State and Territory election since 1901.
The original table – Federal and State Election Dates Since 1945 – was taken from Abiding Interests, a book by former prime minister Gough Whitlam, published in 1997. The table has been extended to show every election since 1901.
Elections for the Tasmanian Legislative Council take place every May and are not shown here. Where separate elections were held for other Legislative Councils, or for the Senate, the dates are given in brackets.
The table shows that 1942 and 2000 are the only years since Federation in which no federal, state or territory elections were held.
