An electoral section was established in the Department of Home Affairs to conduct Federal elections.
1914
Divisional Returning Officers were appointed to run elections in each electoral division.
1949
Industrial ballots were first conducted by the Electoral Branch.
1973
The Australian Electoral Office was established as a statutory authority.
1980
First election conducted for Northern Territory Legislative Assembly on June 7.
1984
The Australian Electoral Commission was created as an independent statutory authority.

Public funding of election campaigns and disclosure of political donations and electoral expenditure were introduced.

Registration of political parties introduced.

1989
First election conducted for Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly on March 4.
1990
First election conducted for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC).
