I speak for many people here in Australia who do not = agree=20 with the actions of our Prime Minister John Howard. He = reminds me of=20 a male version of Margaret Thatcher. Go in, boots and all, = without=20 any caring of a human situation.=20

The people on board are not Australian citizens. They = do not=20 hold any papers to land here. They left from Indonesia and = were=20 rescued in international waters. The only reason they are in = Australian waters is because they hijacked your ship and = threatened=20 your captain with violence unless he turned the ship back. = When you=20 are rescued at sea you don't get to choose where you are = dropped=20 off, its the closest port the ship can safely dock.=20

Don't you care that citizens of your country are = being held=20 in this way?=20

We help anyone who is in need, we have received = literally=20 thousands of refugees, but these people resorted to violence = and=20 threats to get their own way. Please do not criticise us = Australians=20 for not wanting these criminals when it is your crew and = ship=20 sitting out there held by these people.=20

What a shame that Norway has been drawn into this = whole=20 thing. Please understand that Australians are (mostly) fair = and=20 reasonable people. Every single day in the streets of our = cities and=20 suburbs you hear people speaking Arabic, Chinese, Greek and = many=20 other languages. Anglos are now the minority in many places. = And=20 there is (mostly) harmony between all the different groups. = The=20 overseas born Australians join me in saying no to an influx = of=20 money-draining refugees.=20

It is not fair to pay for refugee programs, when our = living=20 standards are falling, the economy is slowing, the = Government is=20 taxing us to death, and at the same time, closing our = schools and=20 hospitals. Let some refugees in, sure, but why do we have to = keep=20 paying?=20

The people, whether genuine refugees or not, that = have enough=20 money to pay to get to Australia illegally are stopping many = other=20 genuine refugees in camps all over the world from arriving = in=20 Australia. The people that were rescued by the Tampa were = attempting to=20 arrive in Australia illegally.=20

These people refused asylum in Indonesia, threatened = the=20 Tampa's captain and crew and even threatened the Australian=20 Government. This behaviour is out of line with that of a = genuine=20 refugee, seeking asylum in a safe country. Their actions, = behaviour=20 and threats beg one to question whether their motives are = purely=20 economic and are using the status of a refugee to enter into = Australia as a cover.=20

I've been living a couple of years in Australia, and = I love=20 the country. But I'm not surprised by the fact that John = Howard and=20 his government act the way they do. And I understand = Australia's=20 "problems" with illegal boat refugees.=20

I am dismayed to see that the government of Norway = spoke out=20 against Australia's action in boarding the Tampa.=20

The Captain was guaranteed the medical assistance he = sought=20 and he stated he would wait in his position outside = Australian=20 waters for that assistance to arrive. He then claimed that = the=20 condition of some of the refugees had deteriorated and = steered the=20 ship into Australian waters.=20

A later medical examination of the refugees by = Australian=20 doctors and medics found nothing more serious than a = sprained ankle!=20

Genuine refugees are welcomed into Australia if they = come=20 through the correct channels. Only Canada takes more = refugees per=20 capita than Australia. Australia opened its arms to many = thousands=20 of Albanian refugees during the recent Balkans crisis.=20

A few other letters from Australians who are against = our=20 Government's stance are allowing their emotions to rule = their heads.=20 We have to make a stand against the ever increasing problem = of=20 "people smuggling". I do not apologise for my government. I=20 congratulate them.=20

The Norwegian government's reaction to Australia's = refusal of=20 entry to the ship carrying the illegal immigrants shows a = lack of=20 understanding of the Australian perspective of the issue.=20

Not surprising, considering our two countries are at = opposite=20 ends of the earth. However, the Norwegian captain who had = just left=20 an Australian port does not have a similar excuse. Had he=20 familiarized himself more with the social issues of the = continent he=20 was visiting he would have been aware that the highly = charged=20 illegal immigrant trade is currently the most controversial = of all=20 issues in Australia. And that non-tolerance of the trade is = at an=20 all time high...=20

Had he been better informed he could have both = adhered to=20 international law, and also avoided the dilemma, by taking = the=20 illegal immigrants back to Indonesia, a few hours away. As a = captain=20 in these troubled waters, he certainly should have been = better=20 informed.=20

Australians have, in general, a high regard for = Norway. But=20 your government's strident and at times insulting tone in = its=20 responses, while this issue is being processed, has lost = Norway a=20 lot of friends in Australia.=20

This is a difficult situation for Australia to face. = Although=20 it does not sound rational... you may understand better by = looking=20 at the problems that have been existing for a very long = time.=20

We have a far more serious "boat people" issue to = deal with=20 than most other countries. Remember that "boat people" does = not=20 necessarily mean they are all refugees or asylum seekers. = Our=20 government has more than 100,000 on a waiting list from all = around=20 the world of those trying to obtain refugee status in = Australia.=20

As an Australian who has lived in Norway, I would ask = that=20 Norwegians do not judge all Australians on the actions of = their=20 government.=20

One thing that is clear is that the actions of the = captain of=20 the Tampa have been unquestionably correct and = honourable.=20

There is a significant minority of Australians who = believe=20 that the refugees should be immediately allowed to enter = Australia.=20

Our government has shown itself to be utterly = heartless,=20 almost to the point of racism. Neither the responsible = minister,=20 Phillip Ruddock, nor the Prime Minister, John Howard, has = shown=20 himself to be at all humanitarian. Instead, by treating = refugees=20 badly, they are trying to discourage people from seeing = Australia as=20 a place of refuge.=20

The authorities defame refugees before they even = arrive in=20 Australia as being "potential illegal immigrants." This is = simply=20 prejudice. There can be no evidence that they are criminals, = or=20 undesirable in any other way, until they can be interviewed = and=20 examined by proper judicial authorities.=20

Historically, Australia has benefited, both = culturally and=20 economically from successive waves of immigrants. Welcoming = these=20 people into Australia as part of Australia's multicultural = society=20 is not only a humanitarian act, and in accordance with = maritime=20 conventions, but it is also in our own best interests.=20

I just wanted to let people in Norway know that not = all=20 Australians support the actions of our Government with = regard to the=20 refugees aboad the Tampa.=20

Many of us are ashamed and embarrassed. First of all = to ask=20 the Tampa to pick up the refugees from a sinking boat, and = then to=20 refuse the Tampa entry to Australian waters. And the final = shame, to=20 send the army to board the ship!=20

The refugee situation is not an easy one for = Australia.=20 Community opinion is very divided, and it is fair to say = that a=20 majority does support the government. There is strong = opposition to=20 the idea that these people are "jumping the queue", and a = belief=20 that many of them are economic refugees rather than people = in fear=20 of their lives, because ordinary people could not afford the = thousands of dollars paid to the people-smugglers.=20

Other people point to the fact that Australia does = not have a=20 very large quota of refugees anyway, and that we could do = more to=20 meet international obligations. Obviously there are no easy = answers.=20

But nothing justifies the government's shameful = actions. Even=20 more shameful for us, our opposition party (supposedly = social=20 democratic) is supporting the government, and the only party = to=20 speak out is the Greens.=20

Now to look strong our leader is refusing to help = these=20 people stranded in the middle of the ocean. He is trying to = look=20 like a man of action since he is highly unpopular and an = election is=20 looming. To do this he is using hundreds of innocent people = as=20 political pawns.=20

As a member of the Australian community I would like = to say=20 that I think this ship and the asylum seekers aboard should=20 immediately be able to enter this country and that any other = policy=20 is inhumane.=20

Those people who are apologetic about Australia's = action in=20 relation to the asylum seekers on the Tampa are in a = minority. The=20 fact is in several polls, an average of 95% of Australians = support=20 the government's actions and I don't find it surprising. The = smuggling of illegal migrants from Indonesia is just getting = out of=20 control with intelligence claiming several thousand more are = on=20 their way.=20

Current detention facilities in Australia are at = bursting=20 point and this situation is unsustainable. Australians are=20 supportive of refugees but what we don't appreciate are the = "queue=20 jumpers" who with a lot of money, buy and bribe their way to = Australia and unfairly displacing legitimate refugees who = have gone=20 through the proper processes. We need to send a tough = message to the=20 smugglers that Australia is not a soft target.=20

Indonesian people smugglers are making huge sums of = money=20 from queue jumpers wealthy enough to fly to Indonesia and = hire one=20 way only boats to Australia.=20

The Captain of the Tampa picked up these boat people = in=20 Indonesian waters and was taking them to the nearest port at = Merak,=20 Indonesia. The boat people 'forced' him to return to = international=20 waters where he asked Australia for food and medicine but = not=20 initially for medical aid. Australia agreed to supply these = but=20 forbade the ship to enter Australian waters. The Captain = chose to=20 defy this order and Australia had no other choice but to = assert its=20 sovereignty which it every right to do.=20
