Seasonal Felicitations From VCEpolitics.com

December 24, 2000

Click here to download a naughty ditty! The compliments of the season and a Happy New Year to all regular and casual readers of VCEpolitics.com.

The site will be relatively unattended over the coming days...

However, a big political year looms in 2001. The historic centenary anniversary of Australian Federation occurs on January 1, heralding a year of political celebration, including a re-enactment of the first meeting of the Australian Parliament in Melbourne's Exhibition Buildings in May.

It also will be a year of elections, with polls due in Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory. There will even be early elections for the Melbourne City Council, following its virtual sacking this week!

A Federal election in which John Howard will seek a third term is also due in 2001. On January 22, Howard will have been Prime Minister for 4 years, 10 months, 11 days and will become the seventh longest-serving of Australia's 25 Prime Ministers, surpassed only by Menzies, Hawke, Fraser, Hughes, Lyons and Bruce. He will need to win the next election and remain Prime Minister until November 26, 2002, to move into sixth place. He will need to remain Prime Minister until August 16, 2014 to surpass the record set by his political hero, Sir Robert Menzies!
