So wrote Mike Seccombe in the Sydney Morning Herald on September 9, 2000, over a year before the ALP lost its third consecutive election.

Lack of ideas, excessive caution and pragmatism, and out-of-touch politicians were cited as causes for concern about the ALP's election prospects.
