Mogo No Go - Greens Claim Pressure Group Success

September 24, 2002

The Green movement has claimed success following the announcement by Australian Silicon that it will not proceeed with a proposed charcoal plant in Mogo, NSW.

This is the text of a statement released by NSW Greens Senator Kerry Nettle:

Senator Nettle has today welcomed today's announcement by Australian Silicon that they will not be going ahead with the proposed charcoal plant in Mogo on the NSW south coast.

"This is victory for the local community who have conducted a concerted campaign in defence of the precious Eurobodalla Shire environment." Senator Nettle said.

"Its also a victory for forest campaigners in NSW who have been focussed on this issue in the lead up the State Election in NSW.

"Australian Silicon has finally seen sense in regard to this ill thought out development.

"Any future proposals are certain to attract the same level of opposition as they did in Mogo.

"The company needs to recognise this and scrap any such proposal for good.

Australian Silicon announced their decision in a statement issued to the ASX in which political and community opposition were cited as the key reasons behind the scrapping of the proposals.
