Bob Hawke On Monday Conference In 1974

Bob Hawke’s appearance on the ABC television’s Monday Conference program in September 1974 provides a fascinating glimpse of the man who would become prime minister of Australia nine years later.

Hawke, 44, was President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions and President of the ALP. His appearance on Monday Conference came four months after the re-election of the Whitlam government and thirteen months before its dismissal. Hawke was both supporter and critic of the Whitlam government.

Hawke’s appearance is notable for his willing encounters with trade union critics.

Monday Conference was hosted by the late Robert Moore.

Unfortunately, the clip only provides 12 minutes of audio from the program.
