Neville Wran Interviewed By Michael Willesee

This is the video an interview with NSW Premier Neville Wran, conducted by Michael Willesee on Channel 7.

The interview took place on September 22, 1980, one month before the federal election that saw Malcolm Fraser’s coalition government returned with a reduced majority for a third term.

Wran had been Labor Premier of NSW since May 1976. In 1978, he won a landslide re-election victory. At the time of this interview, he had just been elected National President of the ALP. He went on to win two more elections in 1981 and 1984, before retiring in 1986.

During the election campaign, Wran and Bob Hawke were both used by the ALP to bolster Opposition Leader Bill Hayden’s leadership.

Unfortunately, the start of the interview is missing but the 18 minutes that remain are an interesting insight into one of the ALP’s most successful state leaders.
