1998 Update – During the life of the 38th Parliament there were three by-elections:
- Paul Keating (Blaxland, NSW) resigned before the Parliament met and was replaced by Michael Hatton at a by-election on June 15, 1996.
- The election of Jackie Kelly (Lindsay, NSW) was declared invalid by the Court of Disputed Returns, but she was re-elected at a by-election on October 19, 1996.
- John Langmore (Fraser, ACT) resigned and was replaced by Steven Dargavel at a by-election on February 1, 1997.
A number of changes in party affiliation occurred during the life of the Parliament:
- Pauline Hanson (Oxley, Qld) was elected as a Liberal member, even though she had been dis-endorsed during the election campaign. She subsequently formed a new party known as Pauline Hanson’s One Nation.
- John Bradford (McPherson, Qld) resigned from the Liberal Party to sit as a representative of the Christian Democratic Party.
- Paul Zammit (Lowe, NSW) resigned from the Liberal Party to sit as an independent.
