It follows statements on the American alliance from the Leader of the Opposition, Mark Latham, and responses from the US Ambassador to Australia, Tom Schieffer.

The American Ambassador Mr Tom Schieffer should butt out of intervention in domestic affairs and respect Australian independence, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.
“It is untenable to have a diplomat meddling in domestic policies as he is doing, again, on the issue of withdrawing troops from Iraq,” Senator Brown said. “As with Vietnam, it is Australia’s prerogative.
“The Greens have been calling for the return home of Australian troops over the last year,” Senator Brown said.
