In what was probably their last joint appearance before the November 4 election, Senators Barack Obama and John McCain have spoken at the annual Alfred E. Smith dinner in New York.
Al Smith, (1873-1944) was a four-time Democratic Governor of New York. As the Democratic candidate for President in 1928, he was the first Catholic nominated by a major party.
The annual dinner is traditionally an occasion when political guests give comedic performances. Both candidates delivered witty and self-deprecating speeches.
