Peter Garrett Announces End Of Home Insulation Program

The Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, has announced the end of the Rudd government’s home insulation program.

Garrett announced a new Household Renewable Energy Bonus scheme to replace the Home Insulation Program and the Solar Hot Water Rebate. Significant changes has also been made to the Green Loans Scheme.

The announcement comes after months of allegations of waste and rip-offs in the program, including the deaths of a number of workers. Garrett said: “The Government’s announcing today a series of changes to the environmental programs of the government to boost safety and to improve environmental performance. And these changes are intended to boost safety for households and safety for workers whose employment has been funded by these important programs.” [Read more…]

Paul Fletcher (Lib-Bradfield) – Maiden Speech

This is Paul Fletcher’s maiden speech to the House of Representatives as the Liberal member for Bradfield.

Flectcher won Bradfield in a by-election on December 5, 2009. He replaced Brendan Nelson, the former Liberal leader who had represented the seat since 1996.

Bradfield is an inner metropolitcan electorate in North Sydney. It includes Killara, Pymble, Roseville, St Ives, Wahroonga and extends to parts of Hornsby and Normanhurst.

Fletcher, 45, has worked as a solicitor and in a variety of corporate positions. He was Director of Corporate and Regulator Affairs with Optus between 2000-07. He was an adviser and Chief of Staff to Howard government minister Senator Richard Alston between 1996-2000. [Read more…]

Kelly O’Dwyer (Lib-Higgins) – Maiden Speech

This is the first speech to the House of Representatives of Kelly O’Dwyer, the Liberal member for Higgins.

She was elected at a by-election on December 5, 2009, following the retirement of Peter Costello.

Higgins is south-eastern suburban electorate in Melbourne. It stretches from South Yarra and Toorak in the north-west to Hughesdale and Murrumbeena in the south-east. It includes Armadale, Malvern, Kooyong and parts of Glen Iris.

Created in 1949, Higgins has been represented by Harold Holt (1949-67) who was Treasurer and then Prime Minister. Upon his death, he was succeeded by John Gorton (1968-75), who was also prime minister. Peter Costello (1990-2009) was Treasurer in the Howard government.

O’Dwyer, a lawyer, was adviser to Costello before entering parliament. She also worked as an executive of the National Australia bank. [Read more…]

Tony Abbott On Housewives And Ironing

Tony Abbott has made another gaffe about women, this time referring to housewives doing the ironing.

Abbott was visiting a dry cleaning business in Queanbeyan, just outside Canberra, to campaign against the Rudd government’s proposed emissions trading scheme.

Arguing that electricity prices will be forced up, Abbott said: “What the housewives of Australia need to understand as they do the ironing is that if they get it done commercially it’s going to go up in price.” [Read more…]

Turnbull Says He Will Cross The Floor To Support Rudd Government’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme

The former Opposition Leader, Malcolm Turnbull, has signalled his intention to cross the floor and support the Rudd government’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme Bill.

Turnbull spoke on the bill in the House of Representatives today. He told the House: “All of us here are accountable not just to our constituents but also to the generations that will come after them and after us.”

Turnbull told the House climate change is a global problem: “Climate change policy has to recognise these real risks, these real threats to the safety of our planet. It is an exercise in risk management and no reasonable person could regard the risk as being so low that no action was warranted.” [Read more…]
