The United Nations Refugee Agency has produced a scathing report on conditions at the Regional Processing Centre on Nauru.
The report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said “the current policies, conditions and operational approaches” on Nauru “do not comply with international standards”.
In particular, the report says the conditions at Nauru:
- constitute arbitrary and mandatory detention under international law;
- despite a sound legal framework, do not provide a fair, efficient and expeditious system for assessing refugee claims;
- do not provide safe and humane conditions of treatment in detention; and
- do not provide for adequate and timely solutions for refugees.
The report is based on a visit to Nauru from October 7-9, 2013. It makes a series of recommendations in relation to operations on Nauru and in relation to children and mental and physical health.
