Queensland Parliamentary Committee Recommends Fixed Four-Year Terms

A Queensland parliamentary committee has recommended that the parliament proceed with moves towards introducing fixed four-year terms for the Legislative Assembly.

The Finance and Administration Committee recommended amendments to a proposed bill that would provide for a referendum to be put to the electorate in 2016 that would introduce fixed four-year terms.

The proposal has bipartisan support from the ALP and the Liberal National Party (LNP). [Read more…]


Barry Jones: Whitlam’s Vision Of Social Democracy – Parliament And Party

This is a paper presented by Barry Jones at a symposium conducted by the Whitlam Institute.

The symposium was titled: Gough Whitlam and the Social Democratic Imagination: the challenge for contemporary public policy.

Barry Jones was a Victorian state member of parliament (MLA Melbourne 1972-77) and then the federal member for Lalor (1977-98). He was Minister for Science and Technology in the Hawke government between 1983 and 1990.

Jones’ paper is notable for its pessimism about the capacity of the ALP to tackle contemporary public policy issues. He says that Gough Whitlam, Don Dunstan, Lionel Murphy and Jim Cairns were “the figures that changed the face of the ALP” in the 1960s and 1970s. He instances powerful figures of the Bob Hawke era, such as Bill Hayden, Mick Young and Kim Beazley, as well as Clyde Cameron. Liberal Party Review Of The 2014 State Election

This is the Victorian Liberal Party’s review of the 2014 State Election.

The review is titled: Good Government for Victoria. It was put together by Dr. David Kemp, a former President of Victorian Division of the Liberal Party and the former federal member for Goldstein.

The review’s Advisory Panel consisted of: Donna Bauer, Andrea Coote, Russel Howcroft, Amanda Millar, Hugh Morgan, John Roskam and Julian Sheezel.

The Liberal-Nationals government of Denis Napthine was defeated after just one term in 2014, winning 38 seats out of a possible 88, a net loss of 7 seats. It was elected under the leadership of Ted Baillieu in 2010. [Read more…]
