Steve Georganas (ALP-Hindmarsh) – Second First Speech

Steve Georganas, the re-elected ALP member for Hindmarsh, has delivered his “second first speech” to the House of Representatives.

Georganas

Georganas, 57, was the member for Hindmarsh for three terms from 2004. At this year’s election, he defeated Matt Williams, the Liberal who defeated him in 2013.

Georganas won Hindmarsh with 34.02% of the primary vote and 50.58% of the two-party-preferred vote. His margin is 1,140 votes in the inner western suburban Adelaide seat. [Read more…]


Tim Hammond (ALP-Perth) – Maiden Speech

Tim Hammond, the new ALP member for Perth, has delivered his maiden speech to the House of Representatives.

Hammond, 40, a barrister, began his legal career with Slater and Gordon. He has specialised in asbestos litigation and acted for indigenous victims of road trauma.

Hammond was promoted directly into the ALP’s shadow ministry as Shadow Assistant Minister for Digital Economy and Startups, Innovation, and Resources and Western Australia. [Read more…]


Senator Jane Hume (Lib-Vic) – Maiden Speech

Senator Jane Hume has delivered the first maiden speech in the upper house, following this year’s double dissolution election.

Hume was elected as Liberal Party senator in Victoria. She won back a position the party lost in 2013.

Previously, Hume was a senior policy adviser at AustralianSuper. She has also been on the board of directors at Federation Square and the Royal Children’s Hospital. [Read more…]


Tim Wilson (Lib-Goldstein) – Maiden Speech

Tim Wilson, the former Human Rights Commissioner, has delivered his maiden speech to the House of Representatives as the Liberal member for the Victorian seat of Goldstein.

Wilson, 36, is a former employee of the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA). The Abbott government appointed him Human Rights Commissioner in 2014. He relinquished the position to contest Liberal Party preselection.

Wilson replaces Andrew Robb in the safe seat based around Brighton and Bentleigh in Melbourne’s south-east. He polled 56.33% of the primary vote and 62.68% of the two-party-preferred vote, a swing of 1.65% towards the Liberal Party. [Read more…]

A former barrister, Wallace has succeeded Mal Brough in the safe Queensland electorate.

Linda Burney, the first indigenous woman to be elected to the House of Representatives, delivered her maiden speech today.

This is the first speech to the House of Representatives from Ted O’Brien, LNP member for Fairfax.

O’Brien was elected at the July 2, 2016 election. He regained the seat for the Liberal National Party and replaced Clive Palmer.
