Anglican Archbishop Dr. Peter Hollingworth’s appointment as Governor-General was announced by the Howard government in April 2001.
Hollingworth took up the position on June 29, 2001. Just 23 months later, on May 28, 2003, Hollingworth resigned, in the wake of controversy over his role in handling sex abuse allegations in the Anglican Church, and in the aftermath of rape allegations, subsequently withdrawn.
