WEL 1998 Election Form Guide

Communications, ABC & Telstra

The area of telecommunications is most important for women as use of telephones and new communications technology is part of the ways in which they manage to combine paid work and domestic responsibilities. Older women and women who live alone, rural women and women working from home need access to good telecommunications for security, advice, support and new work opportunities. This is not the time to sell a national communications system and leave the social aspects to the vagaries of the market.

The ABC, of all broadcasters, has shown the greatest commitment to gender fairness in both employment practices and content. The cuts to the ABC have had major detrimental effects on the spread of programs, an example being that the only women's program on Radio National will terminate this year so the resources can be reallocated.
