Rudd was deposed as Prime Minister on June 24, 2010. Julia Gillard took over that afternoon.

On June 26, 2013, Rudd defeated Gillard by 57 votes to 45 in a Caucus ballot for the ALP leadership. He was sworn in for his second term as prime minister on June 27.

At the federal election of September 7, 2013, Rudd led the ALP to defeat against the Liberal-Nationals Coalition led by Tony Abbott. Rudd continued as caretaker prime minister until Abbott was sworn in on September 18, 2013.
