CHOGM Meeting To Take Place In Shadow Of US Terrorist Attacks

September 12, 2001

Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has spoken today of the importance of preserving democracy in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the United States.

Speaking in the Legislative Assembly, Beattie said: "Democracy is like a fragile flower. It has to be protected. You can't hide it. You can't stop people meeting. If you do that then where is the next step? Does this Parliament stop meeting? Does the Federal Parliament stop meeting? Does the British Parliament stop meeting? Does Congress stop meeting? We have to be clear. Democracy is about people getting together to solve problems."

Beattie said he would be having talks with Acting Prime Minister, John Anderson, about security arrangements for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Brisbane from October 6-9.
