November 28, 2003

President George W Bush serving up Thanksgiving dinner to US soldiers in Baghdad Fascinating insights into the secret trip by President George W. Bush to Baghdad have been published in American media today. The Los Angeles Times reports that "the world did not learn that Bush had spent 2 1/2 hours Thursday on a Thanksgiving Day visit to troops in Baghdad until his jumbo jet was again in the air, flying back to the United States, where he arrived early Friday." The Drudge Report has published the private notes of White House pool reporter Mike Allen who was first told of the impending visit at a parking lot near Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas. As Air Force One took off from Texas, Allen says: "Richard Keil of Bloomberg News leaned across the aisle, shoved aside his I-Pod headset and grinned as he said: 'The President of the United States is AWOL, and we're with him. The ultimate road trip.'" Read the full report here.

The New York Times discusses some of the ethical issues raised by the deliberate deception carried out by the White House. Read the full report here.

The presidential jet, Air Force One, even used a bogus call sign during the ten and a half hour flight to Baghdad. A British Airways pilot who saw the plane and asked "Did I just see Air Force One" was told "Gulfstream 5". Read the Washington Post report here.
