Parliamentary Committees are composed of members of parliament from all sides.
Much work of the Parliament is done in its Committees. Some committees are charged with the task of investigating specific issues (Select Committees) and reporting back to the parliament with recommendations for action. The government may choose to adopt or ignore Committee recommendations.
Other Committees are established on a permanent basis (Standing Committees) and cover matters as diverse as foreign affairs, electoral matters and parliamentary privileges.
Committees may exist in either House or comprise members from both houses (Joint Committees).
Senate Estimates Committees are a notable example of the role played by Committees in monitoring the activities and expenditure of government departments. There are also separate Legislative Committees that examine government legislation.
