This is the full list of members who served in the ninth House of Representatives from 1922 until 1925.
In a 75-member chamber, the Nationalist Party government of Prime Minister William Morris Hughes lost its majority at the December 16, 1922 election, winning 26 (-11) seats to the ALP’s 29 (+3). The Country Party won 14 seats and the balance of power in the House. There were five Liberal Party members from South Australia and Victoria, who were Nationalists but anti-Hughes. One independent was elected.
The ALP polled 42.30% of the primary vote, a loss of 0.19%. The Nationalists polled 35.23% (-9.85%), whilst the Country Party secured 3.30%.
Seven weeks after the election, Hughes was replaced as prime minister by Stanley Melbourne Bruce. The Country Party demanded that Hughes be replaced in return for their agreement to form a Coalition government. The coalition arrangement has endured ever since. The Country Party leader, Earle Page, effectively took on the role of Deputy Prime Minister, even though that term was not used officially until the 1960s. The government became known as the Bruce-Page government. The Liberal Party dissolved after Hughes was removed, its members rejoining the Nationalists.
The 1922 election was the last conducted with non-compulsory voting.
There were no by-elections in the Ninth Parliament. Accordingly, the table below shows 76 members. This was the first parliament in which no by-elections took place. Subsequently, there were no by-elections in the 18th Parliament (1946-49), 19th Parliament (1949-51) and the 43rd Parliament (2010-13).
The first table shows the state-by-state breakdown of the House following the 1917 election.
The second table lists the 76 members who served in the 8th House of Representatives. *The Northern Territory member had voting rights only for matters affecting the territory and is therefore excluded from the calculations of party strength in the House.
