Carbon Tax Repeal Bill Defeated In Senate As Palmer Squabbles With Government Over Amendments

The Senate has rejected an Abbott government bill to repeal the carbon tax.

A combination of ALP, Greens and Palmer United Party senators, supported by Motoring Enthusiast Senator Ricky Muir, voted 37-35 to defeat the bill that would have abolished the carbon tax.

The bill failed due to a breakdown in negotiations between the government and the Palmer United Party. Palmer wanted the legislation to mandate that power savings be passed on to consumers. In the end, the amendment moved by Palmer was judged to be a tax that the Senate had no power to introduce. [Read more…]


Greg Hunt Says Carbon Tax Set To Be Abolished But Government Will Negotiate With Palmer

The Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt, says the carbon tax is now set to be abolished but the government is willing to negotiate with Clive Palmer over savings guarantees for consumers.

Hunt held a press conference at 6.45pm tonight, an hour after Clive Palmer announced that the Palmer United Party (PUP) would support the immediate abolition of the carbon tax.

However, in response to Palmer’s call for a zero-rated emissions trading scheme, Hunt reiterated the coalition’s position. He said: “An ETS is not our policy but we haven’t seen the amendments yet. It has not been and is not our policy.” [Read more…]


Direct Action: Greg Hunt Releases Emissions Reduction Fund White Paper

The Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt, has released the federal government’s Emissions Reduction Fund White Paper.

A White Paper is an official statement of government policy.

The White Paper sets out the government’s “direct action” policy and what Hunt says is a “cost effective, practical and simple approach to reduce our national emissions without a multi-billion dollar carbon tax”.

The Emissions Reduction Fund is the “centrepiece” of the government’s “efforts to tackle climate change”. Hunt says the government remains committed to the abolition of the carbon tax and a 5% reduction in emissions by 2020. [Read more…]


Mobilising The Green Army

The Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt, has announced further details of the government’s Green Army, one of its key environmental election promises.

Hunt released a Draft Statement of Requirements which sets out the key design features of the Green Army. The scheme is due to commence in July this year.

The government has invited feedback on the draft requirements, ahead of inviting applications from service providers.

Abbott And Hunt Release Carbon Tax Repeal Legislation

The Abbott government has released an exposure draft of its carbon tax repeal legislation.

The legislation will be open for consultation until November 4, ahead of the return of Parliament on November 12.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Environment Minister Greg Hunt made the announcement at a press conference in Canberra today. They reaffirmed their commitment to introducing the repeal legislation as the first item of business in the new Parliament. [Read more…]


Kennett For Canberra Stories Just A Media Beat-Up

The lack of quality Sunday newspapers in Australia oftens means that the public is subjected to quite loopy “reporting” on the day of Rest. So it is today with reports of a possible move by Jeff Kennett to contest pre-selection for the federal electorate of Menzies.

Herald-SunMenzies is held by the conservative Liberal Kevin Andrews, the man responsible for the private members bill that overturned the Northern Territory’s voluntary euthanasia legislation in 1997. Andrews is supported by John Howard.

It is reported that there are two other Liberals possibly in the running for Menzies. One is Louise Staley, a Kennett supporter, whilst the other is Greg Hunt, son of longtime Liberal leader of the Victorian upper house and Kennett critic, Alan Hunt. Were Jeff Kennett to enter this contest, a Herald-Sun source is quoted as saying it would unleash a “shitfight” in the party. [Read more…]
