The 1989 Tasmanian State Election brought the Liberal government of Robin Gray to an end and delivered a Labor government in alliance with the Greens.
The Liberal government was first elected in 1982 and re-elected in 1986. In 1989, it went into the election holding 19 seats in the 35-seat House of Assembly.
The Liberals lost 2 seats, retaining 17, one short of an outright majority.
The ALP also lost a seat and held 13.
The Greens gained 3 seats to hold a total of 5. Bob Brown had been a member of the House of Assembly since 1983. Christine Milne joined him at this election.
